The film centers on an auto driver’s roller-coaster ride through the rough lanes of life, and his highs and lows, all narrated in a matter-of-fact casual way. There may not be many low points in the narration. But then there are no high points either.

So, while Chandru (Arya), one of the fastest auto drivers round the lane, indulges in illegal races when he wants to make a fast buck; goes through the ups and downs in his relationship with mentor Bigle (Lal); seduces and discards Bigle’s cousin and intended bride Rani (Pooja); reels under debts and loses his auto; and the race to his rival ‘son of a gun’ (John Vijay going jarringly overboard with his act), we watch it all with disinterested objectivity. For we neither feel empathy towards Chandru’s plight nor elation when his fortunes turn around overnight.

Arya plays Chandru with casual ease bringing out the wild shades in the character effectively. Lal as Bigle and Jegan as ‘Supply’ give necessary support.

Pooja could have been better utilised than the few scenes she gets. Some of the lines are off-colour and make you squirm in embarrassment. The half-a-dozen songs thrust in haphazardly also break whatever pace the narration has. Again, there is a lot of talk about auto-racing, but the couple of races shown hardly generates any interest or thrill.

The ending is a bit abrupt too. The makers seem to have taken inspiration from the English film ‘Fast and Furious’ where late night illegal motor racing formed the plot.

One can appreciate the debutant director duo of Pushkar and wife Gayatri attempting to break away from the routine format and trying a different approach. But there is not much that involves a viewer here

Three Cheers! Ilayathalapathy Vijay has delivered something different from his usual formula films. The most refreshing thing about Azhagiya Tamil Magan, is that it combines mainstream Tamil film aesthetics with all Vijay image props. What sails the film through is its sense of humour. The gags are funny and so are the one-liners, and debutant writer – director Barathan makes it work due to smart packaging.

ATM may not be palatable to everyone, but for those who suck up this brand of humour with a straw, it’s plenty tickling. Leave your logical mind at home, crank up that sense of humour, and it’s a roller coaster ride of pure unadulterated masala. However, the director is not bothered about the story as it is wafer thin, and in the climax he just cannot fathom how to end the film.

The highlight here is that there are two Vijay’s- a good guy and the bad guy. Barathan has tried out a new format, where both the hero and the villain entertain the audiences with howlarious moments, that brings the house down. Vijay makes it work and believable as he melds effortlessly from casual sang froid to utter seriousness.

Guru (Vijay) a business management student is an ace sprinter, who lives with his friends (Santhanam and Sathyan) in a house owned by former sex- bomb Shakeela (Shakeela in a cameo as herself!) in a colony. He is a good guy and a favourite with his friends and neighbours, and is close to his father and mother (Geeta) who lives in a village near Madurai. One day he meets Abhinaya (Shreya), a rich girl and daughter of a tycoon (Ashish Vidyarti) who slowly falls in love with him due to his good nature. After some running around, both the parents agree for their marriage.

Suddenly Guru starts seeing things that are going to happen in the immediate future! The doctors say he has Extra-Sensory Perception (ESP), and he has two bitter experiences regarding it. Just before Guru and Abhi are to be engaged, Guru gets a very disturbing ESP, of him killing Abhinaya! A shattered Guru distances himself from Abhi and goes away to Mumbai.

Meanwhile, Prasad (Vijay),a spitting image of Guru, a financier and loan shark comes to Chennai and accidentally bumps into Abhi who mistakes him for Guru! Prasad, a mercenary makes merry with Abhi and soon gets engaged to her. Meanwhile Guru sensing trouble, comes back to Chennai to save his lady love, which leads to the final twist in the climax.

The hilarious bickering and bonding between Shriya and Vijay, the scene where they first meet in the temple, stays with you. The bad guy Prasad reciting Tamil poem in college function to felicitate Guru is hilarious. Shriya has a meaty role and has as much footage as the hero and her character is the crux around which ATM revolves. She is pure eye candy and emotes sufficiently well, especially in the crucial climax scene. Santhanam as hero’s side kick is a revelation and raises the comedy bar to a new level. Ashish Vidyarti, Geeta and Ganja Karuppu has small roles.

At the centre of all this mirth is the magical Vijay in a dual role. His terrific comic timing, his ability to mock and lampoon makes his performance absolutely knockout. In the negative character Prasad’s role he is the veritable scene stealer. He has dubbed impressively modulating his voice for both the characters, and the way he dances in the introductory title song is amazing. No two ways about it, Vijay is the heart and soul of ATM!

Count among the high points- A.R Rahman’s chic score, with the opening song Ella Puzhal…. rendered by him being the pick of the lot, the remix Ponmagal Vanthal… is an energetic song done beautifully in a studio set. Nee Marliyn Monroe… an item number picturised on Vijay and Namitha in Phuket islands (has been butchered by the censors!) However the song that is going to be popular with the masses is the folk number Maduraikke Poggathadi, again picturised to give the Tamil nativity feel. Cinematographer Balasubramanian has been able to create breathtaking images along with stunning DI work.

Among the major drawback is its length- 2 hours and 51 minutes! It needs urgent trimming mainly in the first half which is too long and at times sags. All Hyderabad locations seen in various Mahesh Babu films have been used and passed off as Chennai! The film has a problem in its climax, as mass audiences will not able to digest it.

However, if you are looking for some clean fun filled time go for ATM. The one-man entertainment troupe Vijay will make your day!

Jeevan was looking forward to a hat trick of hits with Machakaran. Sadly, it turns out to be a hackneyed, boring regressive piece of kitsch, that leaves you exhausted at the end!

Tamizhvanan, who gave that racy romantic entertainer Kalvanin Kathali ( Did S.J Suryah, ghost direct it?) has dished out one of the most insufferable movies in recent times. The film has no basic script or plot and six songs are thrust into the two and a half hour film at regular intervals, worth a snore!

If there is a discernible narrative at all, it spins like a top around the lovers eloping with the girl’s boorish cop brother trying to outwit them but ends up with egg on his face. Vicky (Jeevan) is the eldest son of a Railway officer, is a perpetual loser in whatever he does and is looked down by other family members. One day he meets Shivani (Kamna Jethmalani) , daughter of a rich textile tycoon, who has brought all the luck to her father, with her Midas touch !

Soon the ‘unlucky’ Vicky is drawn towards the ‘lucky’ Shivani and they fall madly in love! Due to circumstances, they are forced to elope, with Shivani’s cop brother in hot pursuit. The lovers decide to go to Shivani’s father’s village in Theni, where he is considered and treated as “Mr Nice Guy”, a philanthropist and savior of the locals, and is given the honour of conducting the temple Thiruvizha, every year. How the runaway couple against all odds rips his good guy image and exposes him in front of the entire village, forms the rest of this predictable yarn.

It looks like Jeevan sleep walked through this film. A word of unsolicited advice for Jeevan, who now calls himself Mirattal Nayagan ; please do not do such roles like this of a soft romantic vanilla hero, singing dream songs in Switzerland! Kamna is far too cosmetic for comfort. Technically inconsistent, the outcome is neither visually appealing, nor musically happening. Poor Yuvan is having a tough time this Diwali, as he is simply not able to come out with good tunes.

Many, many years back Dr. Rajasekhar made a film with a provocative Tamil title Idhudhanda Police, which stormed the box-office. Later he made similar movies with hard hitting titles, and became a star in his homeland of Andhra. Now after a hiatus the good doctor is back with a Tamil dubbing of his hit Telugu film ‘Yevadaithe Nakenti’ , which he is trying to pass off as a straight film! Once again he has given a in-your face title Udambu Eppadi Irukku, which itself is a remake of the Malayalam film Lion. The film is in the eye of a raging controversy as it is releasing on the same day as Sarath Kumar’s Namnadu, which too is a remake of Lion! But to be fair to Dr.Rajasekhar, he has made a lot of cosmetic changes to the original to make it suitable for the mass Telugu audiences. Major Surya(Dr, Rajasekhar) is larger than life army officer who on returning home finds that his state is in the hands of a corrupt political party and his father (Reghuvaran) the education minister and his bureaucrat brother’s-in-law run the administration along with other corrupt politicians (Kalabhavan Mani) with an iron hand. Surya decides to join politics and cleanse the system from within. How he does it with the help of a lady cop (Mumaith Khan) forms the rest of this mass masala entertainer. On the whole Rajasekhar and director Viveka Bharati has packaged it as a mass masala entertainer with all essential ingredients like fights, sentiments and glamour in the right mix. Mumaith Khan’s item number is sizzling and she proves she can act!

It is conventional wisdom that when actors turn producers or directors they bring in passion, creativity and attachment to the movies they make. Thavam, produced by actor Arjun, stands in proud defiance to this theory.

As a script, the film’s premises do have some promise. A man and woman meet at a suicide point (a scenic waterfall) to end to their lives. Before taking the extreme step (death by sleeping pills), however they decide to spend a day together.

He doesn’t have a job and she is fleeing an unwanted marriage. But minutes after they have both consumed the sleeping pills, fate intervenes. A postman brings an appointment order and with the reason for suicide negated, he survives, and so does she.

It would take actors of considerable talent and an experienced director to make such a sequence work. Arun Vijay, the poor, unlucky actor, who seems to plough on bravely in a career that has never been graced by a hit, isn’t really the star vehicle for this occasion.

Debutant Sakthi Paramesh directs the proceedings as if he doesn’t give a damn. Lesser pleasure the audiences take home, the merrier. Nearly every known film device — plot, logic and good dialogue – is thrown to the winds as actors and technicians recklessly go through the mere motions of making a movie.

Actresses Vandana and Arpitha are such a let down. Vandana plays the pretty but suicidal girl in the opening sequence. Later, her job is to stay elusive — she believes he is already married – as the hero chases her all across town. It’s high time that scriptwriters stop making their lead heroines stereotypes of Miss Goody Two Shoes. Not because they don’t exist, but because they are so exasperating.

Arpitha has the strangest dialogue delivery. She pauses in her dialogues like former Prime Minister Vajpayee. As she hammed and hawed her way, pausing in all the wrong places, one couldn’t help wonder why every pretty face had to end up in acting.

Vadivelu, who was greeted with whistles and loud cheering by the audience, is vulgar and comic in turns. Puking on screen, especially on other actors, has become an obsession for this actor, who nevertheless is sole source of solace. A scene in where he robs an IG’s house without realising who the house belongs to, manages to make you laugh though it is not that funny. In a movie as pedestrian as this, it was one’s consolation prize.

Arjun makes a cameo in the end, as if to take responsibility for inflicting this horror on the audiences. Not long ago, the actor resurrected his nearly dead career by directing in a series of movies that kept him in the reckoning for the crowd-pleaser Mudhalvan. Those movies — Sevegan, Prathab and Jai Hind among them – weren’t great, but there was an endearing attempt to desperately woo the audience that is so sorely missing here

Director Selvabharathy has tried his hand at the oft-repeated ‘mother sentiment’ in Pasupathy C/O Rasakapalayam. But what may salvage the film is the fun and lark-filled situations created by Vivek, who seems to be back at his best.

Umpteen number of movies celebrating motherhood has hit the Tamil screen before. But to the credit of the director it should be said that he goes on ‘exaggerated’ sentimental scenes and has avoided cliched romantic duets.

Ranjth as Pasupathy is an apt choice for the lead role. Carrying no image behind his name, Ranjith has essayed the role with some comfort. Sindhu Tholani as Pasupathy’s friend helps him in nursing his mother back to good health.

But it is the ebullience and energy of Vivek that makes the film tick.He plays a cop in a local station, who assists Pasupathy in his endeavours. Vivek’s typical one-liners, all taking off from contemporary and contextual events are a delight. Imitating thespian Sivaji Ganesan at many places, Vivek shoulders a major burden in the movie.

Pasupathy (Ranjith), leads his life for his mother. He comes from Rasakapalayam to Chennai to earn his livelihood. He meets Dass (Vivek), a constable. After his acquaintance, he manages to gets the job of assisting the cops at the local police station. Pasupathy’s heroics in pinning a criminal down, result in rich rewards for Das. He gets promoted as the local inspector.

A sequence of events leads to Pasupathy’s mother developing cardiac failure. In a bid to save his mother, Pasupathy runs around to arrange for money to meet the medical expenses. But fate comes in the form of a group of extremists, who hatches a conspiracy that lands Paupathy in prison. The movie ends on sentimental note with a touchy climax.

The rest of the cast includes Thyagu, Ilavarasu, Ganja Karuppu among others. Deva has composed the music, while Tajmal has handled the cinematography.

Selvabharathy has managed to provide fun through the segments involving Vivek. In the final reckoning, this may help save the film from being an also-ran
